Retro mannequins
Which
do you need retro mannequins for: to display new
clothes or vintage clothes? Depending on your
answer, you may need an entirely different type
of retro mannequin. How so?
Well, if you want to display vintage clothing,
a new-style mannequin may not work for you –
women used to be smaller, therefore their clothing
used to be smaller. It follows that truly retro
mannequins are smaller.
So, if you want to display vintage clothing,
you may want to take a mannequin from the junior’s
department, unless you can find a real retro mannequin
from the same era as the clothing.
Now, on the other hand, if you are looking for
a “retro” mannequin to display new
clothing, you can find one at an antique shop,
flea market, yard sale, or online auction. And
you can display only small sizes on it. Or you
can simply spice up a standard, newer mannequin.
To turn it into a retro mannequin, the most important
thing you can do besides adding retro-styled clothing
is to add a wig... a beehive wig, a bob wig, etc.
Styles have changed a lot over the years. If you
are going for 60’s space age retro, add
some blue lipstick (paint), fake eyelashes, etc.
Or you could create a 70’s retro mannequin
by adding a long, straight wig, parted down the
middle, and a flower on the cheek.
